StarM “Light and Shadow - VIXX
There are things that shine brighter the more they are hidden away. Like searching for a diamond hidden in the rough, we wanted to try to find the pure and bright side of VIXX, who have become skilled in their manly intensity. The pride of seeing these men move from awkwardness to more natural appearances. The black and white behind the smoky makeup, that reversal charm.
This is our third meeting since Junior. How are you feeling working so regularly?
Ravi: Honestly now and the last year and half has all been a really great time for VIXX; right from debuting up until now, it seems like we’ve grown a lot so we’re really full of pride in our accomplishments.
VIXX’s 1st full album has finally been released. Please introduce the album.
Ken: First off, the album is called ‘Voodoo,’ and the title track is “VOODOO DOLL.” Ravi will give an explanation about ‘Voodoo Doll’ (laughing).
Ravi: The album has 15 songs on it, and 10 of those are new songs. The full album came about with the concept of ‘voodoo doll,’ but we worked really hard to make the album as a whole to blend with the title song. Because of that, it really feels like it was created well.
Hongbin: Additionally, within the basic concept of Voodoo, we aimed to show a variety of feelings.
Ken: There’s also a song that Ravi wrote and composed for fans, so please listen to it a lot~
While preparing your first full album, it seems like your mindsets have changed a bit?
Ravi: First off, it always felt like we were receiving a lot of love every time, so we’re really thankful. And during that time, we were also determined to not lose sight of knowing the feeling of this thankfulness. In order to never change into those who don’t remember this thankfulness, we’re constantly working more to continue with resolve and determination.
Compared to your past albums, what special characteristics does ‘Voodoo Doll’ have?
Ravi: Using a special prop is the biggest feature of the performance. During the preparations for “Voodoo Doll,” we thought, should we use the needle to show the feeling of self-sacrifice? Really, during our vampire and Jekyll and Hyde concepts it went only to the point of “I’ll sacrifice for that woman, but I’ll give everything.” However, the difference this time in “Voodoo Doll” you can see a story in which “It’s for that woman, so I’ll give up everything including my own body.”
Have there been any episodes in which the eye-catching skull needle becomes tangled up?
Ravi: Hongbin, who carries it the most, should talk about this.
Hongbin: When the skull needle was first made, it was a bit short. With that, the impact of the performance was a little weak, so we requested that the stick should be made longer. Since it was made longer, I’d often poke the person next to me with it while practicing. So, it seemed it was a little dangerous, so through trial and error we reduced it to a slightly smaller size.
It’s not heavy?
Hongbin: Even if it was, when we changed the stick again, the thickness was reduced a little bit. The bigger version was slightly bigger, so the weight varied a bit. Because of that, when Ravi spins it, there’s always the chance of him dropping it. (Laughing)
Ravi: If I drop it, it’s really embarrassing.
Spinning it looks cool, but it must be pretty difficult.
Ravi: When I was young, I did Kendo so I can spin it well.
Hyuk: This is a skill learned through Kendo?
Ravi: Yes. I learned Kendo ten years ago so that I could spin this stick, of course haha.
Hongbin: Ravi is a really awesome friend (laughing).
Does VIXX have any experiences making mistakes on stage?
Ravi: While pre-recording a stage, I once completely tossed the skull needle. I threw it in a direction where there wasn’t anyone so thankfully no one was hurt, but I felt I had performed poorly. So even though we had recorded well that day, we had to it again because of me (laughing).
There are 10 new songs on the full album. Among them, if you had to pick one song that you are attached to?
Hyuk: For me, it’s “Only U.”I really like the style and feel of the song, and shooting the video in Sweden was our first stop during our travels in Europe so the meaning is more special, and we made a lot of good memories in that country as a whole.
Hongbin: In my case, I’m attached to “Beautiful Killer.” I’ve listened to it constantly since hearing the first guide. While I’m listening to it, I feel good, and it’s also a song that I made me feel even better while recording. Also, our main vocals hyungs sang it really well for us, so it seems like the quality became even better.
Hyuk: Thank you (laughing).
Hongbin: I said ‘hyungs’. It doesn’t apply for Hyuk~ (laughing)
Ravi: For me, it’s the song I made, “Secret Night” of course. It was really fun to compose, and I also worked really hard on it as much as it was fun. The members also recorded it really well for me, so I’m really attached to it.
Leo: Among the songs, there’s a song called “Someday,” and I really like this song. I think the song feels really warm, and the melody and instruments blend well, so while listening I thought it was a song that matches well with winter.
N: I like both “Someday” and “Thank you for being born,” but I feel really attached to “Secret Night.” If you ask why, Ravi sent me the songs he had composed during the time before he made Secret Night. From that, I could tell how hard he worked on it so when the song came out, in the beginning I didn’t think, “Wow it’s really good,” but as I kept listening to it I became attached. Because one of our members made it, it’s even more like that I think.
Ken: Mine’s also “Secret Night.” Since doing his personal guide, Ravi shared it with me, and I have a lot of memories listening to and practicing the song.
You’ve received a 19+ rating on both “Hyde” and “Voodoo Doll.” While recording this time, did you anticipate receiving this rating?
Ravi: Honestly, we didn’t expect it for “Hyde,” but when I looked at the fact that it got rated 19+, I anticipated that “ah, this is going to be rated 19+ too.”
Hongbin: At first, I made the teaser where you can see my skin being pierced (laughing). When I saw that, I though “Ah, this is going to be given a 19+ rating, too,” and so I worked even harder while shooting it.
The ‘X’ lenses that you wore in the music video seem uncomfortable.
Hongbin: We’ve tried wearing a lot of lenses since “On and On,” but these lenses were much thicker than I thought they would be. Ravi and I were both wearing them, but they were really painful for Ravi. Right?
Ravi: Yeah. At first it was really painful and uncomfortable, but as time passed they came to feel like my own eyes and I got used to them.
Are there any episodes while recording the music video?
Hongbin: All the members put on an especially good performance (laughing).
Ravi: Since we wanted to show a side we had never shown before, we worked really, extra hard. Since we all prepared a lot with all our might, the acting came out really remarkably.
Hongbin: We really wanted our stabbing and distressing acting to seem real.
Your expressions seem to be becoming more natural every day; do you practice those separately?
Hongbin: While doing individual monitoring, I practice a lot. We practice a lot while monitoring ourselves, but since we always have strong concepts, we work hard to give off different feelings within the strong concepts. We look up various references and come up with our expressions and gestures while researching through them.
VIXX is always remembered for their smoky makeup as much as for their songs. Have you had any difficulties because of the makeup?
Hongbin: In my experience, smoky makeup is really uncomfortable. Whether it’s because my eyes are big, or whether my skin is weak, but a lot of eyeliner gets into my eyes, and washing it off can be difficult. Since it’s important to take care of your eyes, it’s hard when it hurts.
Hyuk: My eyes water a lot. Ah, I’m not saying that I cry well (laughing). My eyes have a tendency to be a bit moist, so after doing my eyeliner and makeup, even after doing the stage performance one time its already started to come off, and that’s the most difficult part of the makeup.
Which VIXX member looks the most different after makeup?
Ravi: It’s me. I’m here. I become a bit different.
Hongbin: Before makeup, he’s Wonsik, and after makeup, Ravi comes out. Ha ha.
You did your album showcase in a large venue; how do you feel?
Leo: At first we didn’t know it was a gymnastics stadium. We had only found out the extent once we were going through the schedules. Around the time we finished the world showcases, we asked, “How many seats were filled?” and we heard 8000 seats were filled. Truthfully, when we heard that, we were surprised that “Ah, this many people love VIXX or this many people want to see VIXX’s performance.” Thanks to that, it became a strength to start promotions again after a tiring showcase.
You held global showcases for about one month; it seems like fans in each country would have distinct characters.
Hongbin: There’s definitely a difference between each country. These days, in a place like Japan, a concert culture has developed, and you can really feel it. Order is kept really well, and because of that, we were able to have a concert where everyone stood together and enjoyed it without any mishaps. In Western performances, fans are really somewhat excitable and it seems like the audience and stage all become one. So it really feels like you’re all enjoying it together like a huge festival.
Hyuk: Whether it was because Ken hyung was also enjoying himself, he also showed a performance of throwing a water bottle. He was so excited that he didn’t even close the cap. (laughing)
Hongbin: It wasn’t even a rock concert, but since the water bottle was open, the fans got hit by water. It was great. Haha.
During that time, you really must have gained a lot of fans. What kind of charms did you reveal to them?
Hongbin: Acting skills that belong only to VIXX and the sexiness on stage that comes from those acting skills
Hyuk: Although I’m the group’s maknae, when we’re on stage I give myself compliments like “I’m the best” and “I’m the most attractive,” and I think that the fans can then discover those charms, too.
Leo: There are a lot of people that like my expressions and gesture while on stage, but I think that while we each have our charms, when we gather as six there is a special synergy that people like. When we’re together as a team, you can see that there is a clear difference between us and other groups. Actually, when I monitor the six of us together on TV, there are times that even I can feel an attractive charm that comes from us.
N: People often say “On stage, VIXX has a distinct color that belongs only to VIXX, while offstage they are always appear familiar and close.” There’s a reason why. There’s a sense of intimacy when you discover that someone who lacks nothing and is good at everything is similar to you in some way. I want to say that that’s our charm. I also personally think that people like the feeling that only I can emit on stage.
Ken: I think my charm is my versatility. I have charisma on stage and sometimes give fanservice, and off stage, I also show a cute appearance. Fans seem to be able to feel my love for them through this.
At the last interview, Hongbin said he was self-studying how to play guitar. Has your skill improved a lot since then?
Hongbin: This time around I’ve been receiving a little bit of help from someone else (laughing). Since then, I’ve gotten a lot better, but my skill still isn’t good enough to go anywhere and say “I can play guitar.”
N: I scold him every night. I tell him it’s too loud (laughing).
Hongbin: That’s why I go into the closet alone and practice quietly! (Laughing).
N: Nevertheless, he’s gotten a lot better~
There’s going to be a day when you try to perform [with a guitar] on an official stage, right?
Hongbin: It’s a goal of mine to play guitar while singing at a concert later on.
Hyuk, you’re finally becoming an adult. How do you feel about becoming a university student?
Hyuk: University isn’t based on general education now and it’s a place that is specialized in certain things, so I’m nervous about the unfamiliarity but if I think about the romanticism or fantasies of campuses portrayed in dramas and movies, I’m a bit excited as well.
Hongbin: That’s all a delusion. Because you’re my hoobae [junior]. Hyung has already experienced it all (laughing).
What’s the thing that you want to do first most when you become an adult?
Hyuk: There was a time when I went together with the hyungs to see a movie, but we couldn’t see it because of me since it was rated 19+. I was really sorry at that time, so the first thing I want to do is to go see a movie with my hyungs.
I’ve heard that N and Ken have become fixed guests many times on radio programs
Ken: Yes. I like doing radio. I’m aiming for N hyung’s spot on the programs he appears alone in. (laughing) N hyung is doing really well so since it doesn’t seem like I can push him off, doing it togheter with him is good too. Someday I’d like to though.
N’s voice acting is good so he’s even greedy for more.
N: I just really like the radio, and thus brag about it a lot. Ken became a bit envious of that and of course wanted to try it, too.
N, to what extent have you been able to talk about your own love experiences when you appear as a fixed guest on the radio?
N: I really don’t talk about myself. I have a tendency to talk about my friend’s stories instead. Even though they’re really my friends stories, fans have questioned if they’re mine. I don’t have a lot of experience with dating. Really. So nearly everything I talk about tends to be from stories of my friends or family.
But won’t you run out of stories from people around you?
N: I don’t think I’ll run out of love stories. It seems like I could run out of love stories to talk about but those around me have experienced a lot of love, so I’d like to say that I won’t run out of stories.
Not long ago, a comment that Leo left online became a hot topic on radio.
Leo: When I played soccer when I was younger, I really wanted to win. My school was a school that was good at soccer. The comment I wrote was when I was new and my child-like determination was overflowing. More than it being embarrassing, it remains as a cringe-inducing past.
Didn’t the members tease you a lot? (laughing)
Leo: The two that teased me the most are those sitting next to me now (pointing at Hongbin and Hyuk).
Hyuk: Because I’ve got a good sense, like Ronaldo [T/N: Brazilian soccer player; a reference to that comment Leo left]. Haha.
When does Leo, who is unusually quiet and introverted, speak the most?
Leo: When I met Trey Songz.
Hongbin: At that time, rather than thinking that he talked a lot, I thought, “Why is this hyung like this,” and it was to the point I felt secondhand embarrassment. (laughing) People can talk a lot. But he started talking so much so I was really surprised. However my feelings were the same when I met Park Hyoshin sunbae-nim, so on the other hand I sympathized with his feelings too well and I could understand that heart.
Leo: It was also my birthday that day. Honestly, when the members wanted to go shopping in Beverly Hills, I wanted to rest but seeing as it was my birthday, I went out thinking “Okay, let’s just go.” And then, this really unexpected gift came to be.
It seems like that was the best gift you got this year.
Leo: Honestly, the biggest gift that I received was the congratulations from fans in each country. It seems liked I received a really special gift; it was fascinating and I was really happy.
It seems like you’ve gotten a lot of gifts from your fans; on the other hand, what is the gift you most hope that you can give to your parents?
Hongbin: I want to change my father’s car for him. It seems like he’s driven that car since I was in elementary school.
Hyuk: Then, a house! If not, I want to send them on an extravagant overseas trip!
N: Ah~ I was going to say overseas trip! (laughing). I want to go on a beach trip all together. When I was little, my father went on a trip to the sea every year, but I really hated going. At that time, I preferred to stay and play with my friends. Now, I want to go with my family all together on a trip.
Leo: Since I’m the youngest, my parents are a little bit older. So, I’ve always wanted to give them a gift that will keep them healthy.
Ken: At first I wanted to say that I want to give them a car, but since Hongbin already said that I’ll change it (laughing). I want to give them some nice clothes, but besides that if I can just give them everything that’d of course be even better.
What has changed the most about VIXX from before debut to now?
Hongbin: I think it’d be the way we manage ourselves.
Leo: I think that the mindsets of the members have really changed. Compared to before debut, it feels that we’re a lot more mature. At first that maturity was lacking, and we looked to others to tell us what to do, but now we each manage ourselves more. Now, because it’s not those around us that take care of us, but it feels more like we do it on our own, that I feel our change in maturity is the biggest difference.
Your collaboration with OKDAL was very impressive. If the opportunity arose, who is the musician you’d like to do a collaboration with?
Hyuk: Hmm…with Big Bang sunbae-nims?
Hongbin: You want to do it together with our Big Bang seniors?
Hyuk: Why? Is it okay? I really want to try it (laughing).
Hongbin: It seems like it’d be a really great performance! An extraordinary work of art would come about?
Hyuk: But….is it possible…?
If you dream it, can’t you achieve it? (Laughing). Even now you’re very successful.
Hongbin: Yes. It seems like now we’ve got to formulate that kind of value. We’ve got to work hard to make our dreams into reality (laughing).
You’ve made a promise to your fans to achieve number 1. (At the time of the interview) It seems like that could happen this week or next week. How are you feeling?
Hongbin: Ah, thank you. Since we’ve been having nervous thoughts of “if we could complete our promise like this, it’d be good,” we’re waiting a little anxiously. Our fans listened to the songs a lot so we rose on the charts, and have been showing us a lot of love so while feeling thankful towards them, we of course want to repay that love. So, if we are able to win first for our fans, it feels like we can repay them for what they’ve given us.
Leo: Honestly, it wasn’t VIXX’s goal to win 1st place. Since our goal was to let people recognize our music, our thoughts to “Let’s become more well-known” were bigger for the album as well. But strangely people around us kept saying “I think you’ll guys make it,” “I think you guys will get 1st”, so we gradually started thinking about it. Because of that, the members also thought, “Let’s work as hard as we can to get #1 this time.”
What was the best day of 2013 for VIXX?
Hongbin: I think it might’ve been the day of the Seoul Showcase. It was also a day that we really anticipated and worried about a lot. Before that day came we really practiced a lot for it, but I don’t think my goose bumps went away since standing on the stage from the beginning to the end. It was a really touching best day.
Hyuk: We were able to perform while feeling like “We’re receiving a lot of love,” and “We’re so lucky.”
Hongbin: Though we opened with “On and On,” there was also the intro part with the sound of heartbeats. But it really seems like the sound of my heartbeat at that time just as loud as the intro music. (laughing)
You’ve had a successful showcase and your first full mini-album, are there any plans for a solo concert?
Hongbin: Even though there aren’t any plans as of now, it’s a hopeful step that the members imagine while talking together.
What’s VIXX’s biggest goal for 2014?
Hongbin: In 2014, I hope that VIXX becomes a name that everybody knows. In order to do that, it seems like we’ll have to work hard to distinctly define VIXX’s style so that we can grab the opportunity.
Hyuk: N hyung always says this, but I hope for a “VIXX-ization trend.” I hope that VIXX’s music, VIXX’s clothes, etc become valuable and a trend.
Lastly, please leave a message for the fans.
Hongbin: These days, my desire to return the constant love and cheers we have received from fans is strong. During 2014, we’ll try to give you new and awesome stages, so please keep watching us, and we’ll return even more love to you. Thank you.
Hyuk: I’m really thankful that I was able to with our loving Starlights during my teens. Originally, I wasn’t able to show myself to fans well, but recently, I’ve gradually realized just how thankful I am for fans and their thanks, and I really feel that thankfulness.
Leo: These aren’t just my thoughts, but it seems like Ravi and Ken think this way, too. We received a lot of love in 2013, and we worked hard to return that love on stage, and would then receive even bigger love in return. During 2014, I hope that we can manage to create even cooler, more impressive performances for the fans that will move them.
The biggest driving force to make life worth living for is the belief and hard work to realize your dreams. They believed in their dreams, and finally made those dreams into reality. On the Friday of the same week this interview was held, VIXX realized their first #1 after debut. Because they were more earnest than anyone and the sincerity we felt from them, perhaps VIXX’s #1 is more touching. Just like their lyrics, “Everything will come true,” VIXX realized their dream to be at the top in just a year and a half. We hope that their sincerity towards their fans and music can reach out to even more people, and we support the six men who will wear bigger wings and fly.
